Hello,
welcome to my virtual home. I'm a British urban designer living in
Brazil. To accompany this journey I write this blog to be a bridge
between Brazil and the outside world on the subject of urban
design. This blog contains my
personal obervations and I also share and translate articles
published on other sites. My focus is on how we can best design,
and redevelop, our cities and countryside to support humans on this
planet in the coming decades.
The
blog explores the unique challenges Brazil faces in
sustainable development and urban design. I
present some first hand impressions of urban management, and the
cultural and historical foundations for the attitudes that shape
society in Brazil, which are often difficult for foreigners to
understand. Another important factor is the awesome scale of
the country, as well as the powerful forces of nature, the
jawdropping beauty and ecological diversity. Planning and project
management in Brazil, in comparison with European countries, is on a
whole different level, in terms of scale as well as complexity.
Currently in Brazil, exciting developments are taking place, opportunities, growth and ideas are taking form, because, economically speaking, Brazil is coming into it's own. There is a refreshing optimism in the economic climate in contrast to other parts of the world, and this optimism translates into ambitious projects taking shape on the ground. Brazil is developing so fast economically, that it's playing a game of catch-up in the cities. Another important trend is that Brazil is receiving increased interest from the international community, due to the World Cup and the Olympic Games. This is also bringing external pressure to conform to international standards and regulations. All these issues and perspectives I hope to present to the English speaking world from the perspective of somebody living and working inside Brazil.

On
the other hand, with my experience working and studying outside of
Brazil I want to write for Brazilian urbanists, planners and
architects, to diseminate any news,
current thinking and practices in urban design, from the English
speaking world abroad, that might have escaped their notice. I
want to form a two way learning process. I hope people in Brazil
will be able to understand my beginners Portuguese, and that they
will be kind enough to forgive the errors.
My
areas of professional interest areas are: strategic planning, water
management, transport, public realm design, ecological design and
management, cities for people and sustainability. An
introduction to my portfolio is here on
this blog. I'm also interested in
economics, politics and international relations, while these are not
directly relevant to this blog, it forms the theoretical background
to my writing.

Olá, seja
bem-vindos ao meu espaço virtual. Eu sou uma urbanista
britânica vivendo no Brasil. Para acompanhar esta jornada, eu
escrevo este blog para ser uma ponte entre o Brasil e o mundo lá
fora, referente ao assunto planejamento urbano. Este blog contem
minhas observações pessoais e também compartilho
e traduzo artigos publicados em outros sites. Meu foco é em
como nós podemos projetar melhor, e redesenvolver, nossas
cidades e países para suportar humanos neste planeta nas
futuras décadas.
O blog tenta explorar os
desafios únicos que o Brasil enfrenta em relação
ao design urbano e desenvolvimento sustentável. Eu apresento
algumas impressões, de primeira mão, de gerenciamento
urbano, de base cultural e histórica para as atitudes que se
adequam a sociedade no Brasil, o que normalmente é difícil
para os estrangeiros entendem. Outro fator importante é o
incrível tamanho do país, assim como as poderosas
forças da natureza, uma beleza estonteante e a diversidade
ecológica. Pois, planejando e gerenciamento de projeto no
Brasil, em comparação com os países europeus, é
num level completamente diferente, em termos de escala e também
de complexidade.
Atualmente no Brasil,
exitantes desenvolvimentos estão acontecendo, oportunidades,
crescimento e ideias vão tomando forma, porque,
economicamente, o Brasil está caminhando com as próprias
pernas. Está chegando a hora do Brasil. Há refrescante
otimismo na clima econômica em contraste com outras partes
do mundo, e este otimismo se traduz em ambiciosos projetos tomando
forma na prática. Brasil está se desenvolvendo
economicamente tão rápido, que está jogando
contra o tempo para correr atrás do que está
acontecendo nas cidades. Uma outra trend é que o Brasil está
recebendo interesse aumentada da comuidade internacional por causa da
Copa do Mundo e dos Jogos Olimpíados. Isto também traz
pressão externa para se adequar ao padrões
internacionais de controle e regulamentação, Tudos
esses assuntos e perspectivas espero apresentar do ponto de vista de
alguém vivendo e trabalhando dentro do Brasil.
Por outro lado, com minha
experiência de trabalho e estudo fora do Brasil, eu quero
escrever para urbanistas, projetistas e arquitetos brasileiros, para
disseminar notícias, ideias atuais e práticas no design
urbano publicadas fora do Brasil, que talvez não sejam bem
conhecidas por aqui. Eu quero formar um processo de aprendizagem de
duas vias. Espero que as pessoas no Brasil sejam capaz de entender
meu português iniciante, e que eles sejam gentis o bastante
para perdoarem meus erros.
Minhas áreas de
interesse profissional são: planejamento estratégico,
gerenciamento de águas, transporte, design de espaços
públicos, gerenciamento e projetos ecológicos, cidades
para pessoas e sustentabilidade. Um introdução para meu

e relações internacionais, ao mesmo tempo que estes
assuntos não são diretamente relacionados a este blog,
eles formam a base teórica do meus escritas.
